BURUBURU CENTER

 Buruburu is a large middle-class residential area in the Eastland’s part of Nairobi, Kenya, situated in Makadara District. With availability of residential housing, accessibility through road and rail, and its proximity to Nairobi city center. Buruburu Estate has attracted a large population of people and thus, business ventures including residential flats, matatu transporters, hotels, clubs, super markets, private primary, secondary, and colleges, and furniture industry. In addition, there are very many second hand clothes and shoes, vegetable and fruit markets, guest houses, and technology service industries. They all contribute to the middle class status of the area and the need for service providers in each of the sectors, most of who may not be well trained in each sector industry.

CAP YEI Involvement

CAP YEI established its Basic Employability Skills Training (BEST) in 2011 after conducting market scan to establish skills demand in the area. In the beginning, it was established that Information Technology Enabled Services, Hospitality, Automobile and Electrical skills were in high demand. CAP YEI recruited and trained youth in these skills, however, subsequent job market demands established through dynamic market scans revealed other sector industries provided opportunities for youth employment. So far, Buruburu center has trained and graduated 17 batches of youth. Buruburu has already enrolled 369 youth in the second phase, 235 completed training, 83.83% succeeded to be placed in jobs, 129 are under internship and 6.38% started small businesses.
