Tullow Oil, a multinational oil and gas exploration company, entered Kenya in 2010, after signing agreements to explore oil in various parts, including Turkana.
TULLOW-GIZ project is founded on the findings that the youth in Turkana county have been unable to seize opportunities brought about by Tullow oil wells as well as other subsidiary industries due to lack of necessary skills – among other reasons
Thus, the TULLOW-GIZ project was commissioned by GIZ – E4D Kenya to tackle these bottlenecks using CAP YEI’s market-based and demand-driven approach.
The project aimed to reach about 500 young people in the marginalized areas and offer them opportunities to acquire basic skills and work readiness that could better enable them to access economic livelihood opportunities
Another aim was to link at least 60% of the trained youth with employment opportunities either in Turkana county or elsewhere.
Total of 525 youths from batch 1, 2, and 3 were trained on life skills and PTS modules since the inception of the project
The beneficiaries were trained on three preselected areas: Welding and Fabrication, Automobile and Hospitality – in three regions: Lokichar, Lokori, and Nakukulas.
At the point of final reporting, the program has recorded an average percentage of 63% trainees being linked to employment through industrial linkages and alumni networks.
The project has created networks to government contracting and credit access platform like the youth enterprise fund and follow ups are underway to link the youths to such platforms
