Project Brief

Through funding from USADF, CAP YEI implemented a pilot project on Skills Training in Hospitality and Agribusiness value chains to increase job opportunities (Wage employment or self-employment) to address youth unemployment in Mombasa and Kajiado Counties

Expected Outcomes

  • The project aims to train 210 youthbetween the ages of 18 to 35 to improve their skills and increase employment outcomes in the hospitality and agribusiness sectors; projecting 60% female and 40% male.
  • The training program offers three months of class training and two months of job training (internship). This includes three classesin Kajiado County with 30 trainees and four classes in Mombasa with 30 trainees
  • The pilot project will include a hospitality/tourism model that integrates CAP YEI and YBI’s current sector-focused models and the conclusion of the viability of an agribusiness-hospitality effort
  • At the end of the pilot, 168(80%) youths will be successfully linked with employers in the hospitality sector, and 21 (10%) youth successfully placed in the agribusiness sector.

Achievements

  • Out of the 717 youth who had shown interest in the two counties, 219 were selected to join the program. 127 in Mombasa and 92 in Kajiado.
  • The program has managed to transition 100%of the trainees who had completed training to either internships, jobs (Wage), or self-employment as demonstrated in the graph below.
