Project Brief

McKinsey Social Initiative (MSI) with CAP Youth Empowerment Institute as a partner began The Generation Program in Kenya in 2015. The very first center was set up in Buruburu, offering Financial Service Sales (FSS) program and later Retail and Restaurant Services (RSS) in 2016.

The main objective of the project was to:

To provide youth with skills that they can leverage to seize livelihood opportunities in sectors of financial service sales and retail & restaurant services.

Achievements

  • The first cohort of the initiative graduated 50 participants after eight weeks. At the end of 2015 MSI graduated 489 Participants to close the pilot stage and scaled-up to the first year.
  • In 2016 the program scaled up to have seven centers in Kangemi, Kibera, Ruaraka, South B, Mombasa CBD, Nakuru and Changamwe.
  • The program went on to include Retail and Restaurant Service (RRS) which ran for four weeks and later revised to five weeks.
  • The program also on-boarded two more delivery partner to have a total of 3 Partners and has 4 delivery partners.
  • During the pilot in 2015 we graduated 489, while at the end of 2016 we managed to graduate 2656 in FSS and 456 in RRS.
  • In 2017 we had three cohorts in FSS and two cohorts in RRS. Current numbers graduates are 486 and 148 for FSS and RRS respectively.
  • For the 3rd cohorts in 2017 were a total of in 185 participants in FSS program.
