Project Brief

Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan Project) under Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET(YAW-K-TVET) is a five-year project to improve the Kenyan TVET system through:

  • Improving the quality and relevance of skills training programs within Kenyan TVET institutions.
  • Increase the effectiveness of Kenyan TVET institutions in delivering accessible and gender-responsive skills training programs that meet industry needs and requirements.
  • Increase the effectiveness of Kenyan agencies in implementing TVET reform.
  • Increase economic opportunities for male and female graduates from TVET institutions in Kenya.

CAP YEI is a consulting partner on life skills adoption, and integration within the TVET space to better prepare the graduates and equip them with the right attitude and the necessary soft skills to help them thrive while at the institutions of learning, places of work, and society at large.

Expected Outcomes

  • The project targets New (Pre-service) and Existing (In-service) TVET trainers who are trained and supported by the Master Trainers from the 25 partner National Polytechnics (COEs) and the Kenya School of TVET, formerly Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC) to demonstrate the capacity and ability to deliver life / Soft and employability skills training within (YAW-K-TVET) partner TVET institutions.
  • The project targets 7500 existing (in-service trainers) and 9000 pre-service (new) trainers, thus a total of 16500 key TVET stakeholders.

Achievements

  • Development and accreditation of a level Six Soft and Essential Skills and gender-inclusive Competence curriculum and its Learning and Teaching Guide and the Occupational Standards (OS) by TVET-CDACC.
  • Development and customization of effective soft skills Assessment and Evaluation tools.
  • Piloting the Soft skills Curriculum within the partner COEs, Two National Polytechnics, its endorsement and inclusion in their Training Calendar led to the documentation of the improved behavioural and attitudinal change of the trainees towards learning, time management, self-esteem, and life in general.
  • Institutional training and support through building capacities of the Master Trainers from the partner Institutions and KSTVET; 2004 Master Trainers (1161 Male and 843 Female) from both KS-TVET and the National Polytechnics (COEs) have been supported.
  • Over 3500 Pre-Service Trainers trained indirectly through the KSTVET so far.
  • Roll out and integration of Level 6 Soft Skills Curriculum across the 101 partner TVET institutions (25 Centers of Excellence, 75 Mentee Institutions and the Kenya School of TVET)
