The shipbuilding value chain consists of three major phases: pre-production, production, and post-production. The pre-production phase of shipbuilding includes the phases of design and project management. The production phase includes hull construction and equipment/systems purchasing and integration. Finally, post-production activities include in-service support (ISS) of the vessel after its final construction, customer support.
Kenya has existing ship building facilities for small vessels and, currently, the Kenya Navy is constructing a modern ship building yard in Mombasa. The existing actors also handle the specialized in-service support including vessel repair and maintenance.
Technical training is needed to teach personnel on the operation and maintenance of the vessel systems. The operational expense of onboard training makes training institutions that have invested in specialized virtual reality and training simulation attractive alternatives.
