Abdulkadir Hussein Shali, 35, was born in Kiunga, Lamu County a seventh child in his family. He went to Lamu high school and after completion trained in computer software engineering (certificate), and also received training on basic safety at Bandari College and the National Youth Service College in Gilgil.
Shali has always dreamt of financial sustainability to help his family and was looking for a way to achieve this. He learned about the Goblue project through an advertisement by the Lamu County government, to which he applied and got shortlisted to join the Lamu Vocational Training Center and pursue Maritime Security. During his training, he was engaged in different programs like entrepreneurship sessions, technical classes, practical sessions, field visits, exposure visits, life skills, work readiness skills, guest lectures, and activities like drills, ‘parades, swimming and diving lessons, which helped him become command-savvy.
Shali is currently placed as a maritime security guard along the port of Lamu. He is grateful because he is now in a position to financially support his mother who is a widow. He encourages young people to enroll in Lamu VTC to gain the skills to honestly earn a living, and grateful to the GoBlue project, his mentors, the Lamu Vocational Training College where the training was conducted, and all the staff members who contributed to his success.
