Anita Makandi Success Story

NAME: Anita Makandi

COURSE: Hospitality

CENTER: Mpeketoni Vocational Training Center

“My name is Anita Makandi, I’m 18 years old, born in Nyeri, and came to Mpeketoni in Lamu County in the year 2014.

I come from a family of three siblings and my mother is a small-scale farmer; that’s what she did to bring us up as a single parent. Life wasn’t that smooth but Luckily, I finished my high school education and soon after, my brother mentioned that he had heard about the KOICA- GIZ project from a friend, but I was skeptical about it. After my last K.C.S.E paper, I stayed home for three days and then visited the institution (Mpeketoni Polytechnic); the instructors I found there explained in detail about the program, and to my surprise were fully sponsored. I enrolled and joined the class the next day because I knew my mother couldn’t afford my fees to a higher institution so even after getting my results I had no hopes to continue with my studies. After three months of class training, I was placed as an intern at Islanders Point Restaurant in Mokowe. I was later employed as a waitress, earning a KES. 10, 000 per month, which is not bad for a start because I can easily help my mother with her projects. Am looking forward to pursuing a degree in hospitality to fulfill my dream of being an air hostess.

I recommend CAP YEI’s E4D project to any youth because I have benefited from it and I can gladly say that the project has opened doors for me.”
